Bacteriology Committee

Mission Statement

The Bacteriology Committee represents APS members interested in issues related to phytobacteriology, including plant pathogens and other bacterial associations with plants. The committee provides a forum for discussions on current issues, as well as promotes the discipline of phytobacteriology by sponsoring symposia, colloquia, discussions, and workshops at the annual meeting of the American Phytopathological Society. By forming ad hoc committees that actively address current issues in bacteriology, the committee provides a mechanism for addressing these issues as well as provides APS with a bacteriology resource.

Proposed Sessions for APS Annual Meeting

"Role of Type III Effectors in Bacterial Virulence" (Organizers: Frank White and Xiaoyan Tan). Although the role of bacterial type III effectors in triggering plant resistance is well known, the disease promoting functions of these virulence proteins have been elusive until recently. This session proposes to feature talks by leading investigators to illuminate this area.

"Functional Genomics Meets Bacterial Diseases, Part III: Xanthomonas and Xylella" (Organizers: Jeff Jones and Frank Louws). As part of an on-going series, this session seeks to go beyond genomics of these organisms and explore practical implications related to biology and disease management.

"Evolution of virulence in Gram-positive bacteria" (Organizer: Rosemary Loria). The goal of this session is to discuss emerging pathogens, as well as examine common strategies among plant and animal pathogens. New developments in comparative and functional genomics will be included.
