Virology Committee

Mission Statement

The Virology Committee of APS provides a forum for discussion of issues in plant pathology that are important to plant virologists. The committee supplies up-to-date information to members on current issues in virology by sponsoring symposia, workshops, colloquia, and discussions sessions at the annual meeting of the American Phytopathological Society. The committee chairperson or committee members who organize sessions actively solicit external funding for their sessions and gratefully acknowledge these sources. The committee vigorously supports and advises the American Type Culture Collection with regard to the plant virus collection, an invaluable resource for all plant virologists. Through sponsorship of published information such as the plant virus slide sets and this web site the committee provides virologists with written and visual information that is useful in research, extension, and teaching. A subcommittee of the Virology Committee is working closely with USDA/APHIS to streamline the permit process for interstate shipment of viruses and virus strains by annually updating the widely prevalent plant virus list. This list is also used to help identify geographic regions where plants containing viral transgenes can be field tested. Through such activities, the Virology Committee of APS actively serves the membership of APS.
