Brown pustules (uredinia) are apparent on the lower leaf surfaces and are surrounded by a chlorotic halo. Subsequent outbreaks of rust may give the pustules a circular pattern or sets as concentric rings. Photograph courtesy of Dr. K.R. Summy, UTPA.

Host: Antirrhinum majus; Snapdragon
Disease name: Snapdragon rust
Pathogen name: Puccinia antirrhini
Control of snapdragon rust is dependent upon proper spacing of plants to ensure adequate aeration between foliage and reduced periods of leaf wetness. Temperatures of 60 - 70 degrees F appear to favor rust development. Urediniospores may be spread from plant to plant by insects so control of pests is recommended. Rust resistant varieties are available.
