Host: Glycine max L. Merr., Soybean
Disease name: Asian soybean rust
Pathogen name: Phakopsora pachyrhizi
Asian soybean rust, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, attacks the foliage of soybean plants causing premature defoliation. Pod filling, seed size, seed weight, seed germination and yield are negatively affected. Symptom of soybean rust appears as leaf lesions and pustules (areas with orange to brick-red spores on the underside). On the upper leaf surface, initial lesions may be of a reduced size, yellow flecks or specks in the leaf tissue. These lesions darken and may range from dark brown or reddish brown to tan or gray-green in color. Mature lesions may be somewhat larger and may merge or run together affecting larger areas of leaf tissue.
