Host: Psidium guajava L., Guava
Disease name: Sooty mold
Pathogen name: Capnodium mangiferae Cke. & Brown
The disease is easily identifiable the orchards by the presence of a black, velvety growth covering the leaf surface. The fungus produces mycelium which is usually superficial and dark and grows on the flowers, both tender and older leaves, stems, and fruits. The severity of infection depends on the honeydew secretions by the scale insect, which provides the necessary medium for the fungal growth. The photosynthetic ability of the plant is highly reduced. Black coating is also found on the fruits.
