Carbon Dioxide Fixation by Uredospores of Uromyces phaseoli and its Incorporation into Cellular Metabolites. G. F. Stallknecht, Former Research Fellow, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota, now Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Science, University of Idaho, Aberdeen 83210; C. J. Mirocha, Associate Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul 55101. Phytopathology 60:1338-1342. Accepted for publication 3 April 1970. DOI: 10.1094/Phyto-60-1338.

CO2 fixation by uredospores of Uromyces phaseoli was greatest during the initial stages of germination, decreasing rapidly during the first 2 hr of germination. No difference in CO2 fixation was noted between spores germinating in light (3,000 ft-c) or in total darkness. CO2 fixed by germinating spores was incorporated into the soluble low mol wt metabolites, RNA, and into other macromolecules of the spores. The greatest amount of 14C was found in the macromolecular fraction of the spores, represented by proteins and polysaccharides.
