Loroglossol: An Orchid Phytoalexin. E. W. B. Ward, Agriculture Canada, Research Institute, University Sub Post Office, London, Ontario, Canada N6A 5B7; C. H. Unwin(2), and A. Stoessl(3). (2)(3)Agriculture Canada, Research Institute, University Sub Post Office, London, Ontario, Canada N6A 5B7. Phytopathology 65:632-633. DOI: 10.1094/Phyto-65-632.

Loroglossol, a dihydrophenanthrene first isolated from orchids (Loroglossum hircinum) after inoculation with fungi, was found to be active against spore germination of Monilinia fructicola and Phytophthora infestans (ED50 approximately 5 × 10–5M). Previous reports that the compound is inactive presumably were due to its relatively low solubility.
