Disease Control and Pest Management

Leakage, Infection, and Emergence of Injured Corn Seed. W. E. McKeen, Professor, Department of Plant Sciences, The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada; Bertrum MacDonald, Graduate Student, Department of Plant Sciences, The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. Phytopathology 66:928-930. Accepted for publication 12 January 1976. DOI: 10.1094/Phyto-66-928.

A technique was devised to injure corn seed quickly and uniformly. Fungicides largely restored the emergence of injured seeds and were most beneficial when the seed and seedling were under stress. Absorptiometer and conductivity tests of leachates proved that loss of ions and matter from the seed increased as the number of injuries and period of leaching increased.

Additional keywords: leachate-conductivity, seed injury.
