Barley leaf tissue systemically and mechanically infected with the ND18 strain of barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) contained numerous chloroplast aberrations including: swelling, deformation of membranes, cytoplasmic invaginations, peripheral vesicles, and BSMV particles attached to the limiting membrane. Several morphologically aberrant plastid types were located within single affected cells. Two defective types were characterized by the pellucid appearance of the stroma.
