Cylindrocarpon Root Rot of Tulip Poplar. J. D. MacDonald, Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, University of California, Davis 95616. E. E. Butler, Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, University of California, Davis 95616. Plant Dis. 65:154-157. Copyright 1981 American Phytopathological Society. DOI: 10.1094/PD-65-154.

Tulip poplars in a 6-yr-old landscape planting were severely stunted as a result of a root disease characterized by black, scabby lesions in cortical tissues. A pathogen was identified and described as Cylindrocarpon liriodendri MacDonald & Butler sp. nov. In greenhouse inoculations, C. liriodendri appeared less virulent than Cylindrocladium floridanum to tulip poplar, although symptoms produced by the two pathogens were very similar.
