​Books for the World Program

​Purpose of the Fund

Established in 2013, this fund is designed to help scientists, educators, extension personnel and other agriculturalists in developing countries acquire educational materials from APS PRESS and to promote international distribution of books, electronic media, and other APS resources. The intended focus of this fund is on diagnostic tools and pest management.

Your donations help scientists from around the world get the A​PS PRESS resources they need.​

Funds Available

  • FY25 Amount: $3,000 (up to six at $500 each)
    • Those selected for funding may also be eligible to receive one-year of APS membership funded by the APS Foundation. This offer is only available once to individuals who have never been an APS member (lapsed and expired memberships are not eligible). ​
  • Deadline to apply: February 28, 2025​

​Eligibility

  • Membership in APS is not required. 
  • Preference is given applicants from developing countries who demonstrate financial need. In rare cases, applicants may reside within the U.S., but to be considered for funding the applicant must demonstrate that they are unable to gain access to the resources by other me​ans or that they intend to travel to an international destination to assist with agricultural development. 
  • Resources may be requested for an applicant'​s personal library, but preference will be given to shared usage of resources. 
  • Previous recipients of the fund may apply again but priority is given to new applicants.

Application Requirements

​Application materials must be saved into one PDF document and uploaded using the online application form. 

List of Resources: Contact the APS PRESS book department to request a proforma invoice (reference this is for the Books for the World Fund Application) to ensure correct pricing and shipping is included in your application. A copy of the proforma invoice is to be included in your application. The total cost of resources including shipping, duties, and taxes ma​y not exceed $500 USD. Applicants may select from any of the resources available from APS PRESS using the current prices listed in the online bookstore. Librarians may apply on behalf of their institutions, and in such cases, should describe how resources will be placed in a managed library with an established borrowing system. 

Applicant Statement Letter (2 page maximum): Letter to include reasons for requesting educational resources from APS (including financial need, which may include foreign exchange issues) and what will be done with the resources once received (where they will be stored, how utilized, etc.) and plans for sharing of the resources. (Example, sharing with students, libraries, laboratory staff, etc.)​

Letter of Recommendation (1 page maximum) from a local sponsor/partner (head of institute, librarian, supervisor, or other reference) to support the applicant’s statement. The recommendation letter must include the local sponsor’s name, mailing address, and email contact information. 

Apply for Funding

Save all required materials into one PDF file prior to submitting your application. Applications are accepted through February 28 of each year.

SUBMIT APPLICATION

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or considered for funding. ​

Review Selection
