​​​​​​Crown gall, induced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, is characterized by the development of conspicuous, abnormal tissue growths (galls) on hosts. The Ti plasmid in the pathogenic bacterium controls the transfer of a piece of its own DNA into the plant cell. By studying the disease processes accompanying gall formation, investigators have learned how to use these processes in the development of biotechnology to transfer pieces of DNA between plants or between plants and various microbes. Thus, crown gall has become the "original genetic engineer."​

​The Storkan-Hanes-McCaslin Foundation encourages research by offering financial assistance to graduate students working on soilborne diseases of plants. Submit your proposal electronically no later than May 1, 2025.
