St. Paul, Minn. (September 27, 2005)—The American Phytopathological Society (APS) has released a public statement endorsing the resolution by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) supporting the teaching of evolutionary theory and opposing the teaching of “intelligent design theory” as an alternative to it in science curricula.
“The evidence for evolution is multifaceted, robust, and congruent,” said APS President John Andrews. “As a scientific society, APS has an obligation to speak out on what is being taught in the name of science. Since intelligent design theory cannot be addressed by science it does not belong in science instruction,” Andrews said.
The APS endorsement and the AAAS resolution are available on APSnet.
APS is a nonprofit, professional scientific organization. The research of the organization’s 5,000 worldwide members advances the understanding of the science of plant pathology and its application to plant health.
