Onion ipmPIPE: A Coordinated Effort to Improve the Management
of Onion Thrips and Iris yellow spot virus for the U.S. Onion Industry
Onion ipmPIPE is an online platform funded by the Specialty Crop Research Initiative of USDA-NIFA. The project's long-term goal is to optimize pest management decisions in onion.
Project participants in 7 states jave generated an annual average of 500 reports on the occurrence of 20 priority insect pests and plant diseases, and the project has enhanced the IPM strategies of growers and industry in response to these reports. It has also developed a comprehensive website and educational materials, and is developing risk assessment models, a smartphone app, enhanced diagnostic tools, and more.
This article provides an overview of progress made to date, and describes some of Onion ipmPIPE's current challenges and opportunities.
