Southern Division Officer Positions (listed in Manual of Operations)
Each year, the SD-APS membership elects a new Vice President and Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative to serve as a member of the Executive Committee for the coming year. Details about each position are included below. Nominations for both positions typically open in October/November.
Vice President for the Southern Division - APS
Nominations for SD-APS Vice President must be submitted to SD-APS Secretary-Treasurer, Rebecca Melanson (rebecca.melanson@msstate.edu) by December 13, 2023. Please include “SD-APS VP Nomination” in the subject line.
The Vice President is responsible for membership and assisting with program development for the annual meeting and will become President Elect upon completion of the term of office.
Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative for the Southern Division - APS
Nominations for SD-APS Graduate Student Representative must be submitted to SD-APS Secretary-Treasurer, Rebecca Melanson (rebecca.melanson@msstate.edu) by January 26, 2024. Please include “SD-APS Graduate Student Representative Nomination” in the subject line.
The Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representatives, working closely with the members of the Executive Committee of the Southern Division of APS, have responsibility for leadership/supervision of all events related to the graduate students, including the Graduate Student Meeting/Social and planned or designated graduate student events at the annual meeting of the Southern Division of APS. It is the responsibility of the Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representatives to work with the designated Executive Committee Member(s) to maintain an updated plan of activities for the annual meeting of the Southern Division of APS. Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representatives will serve staggered two-year terms. The Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative serving in his or her second year will be considered the Senior Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative, and the Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative serving in his or her first year will be considered the Junior Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative. A new Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative will be elected each year. Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scientists eligible for the position must be active members of the Southern Division and must maintain a status of Graduate Student or Postdoctoral Scientist at a University within the Southern Division for the duration of the term. Nominations for the Junior Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative will be submitted to the Secretary-Treasurer when the call for nominations is sent out prior to the annual meeting of the Southern Division. Any active member of the Southern Division can submit a nomination. The election for the Junior Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Representative will take place during the meeting of the Graduate Students at the annual Southern Division meeting. No absentee ballots will be accepted.
