​For many, if not all, of us, to be a graduate student or to mentor a graduate student is a significant part of our careers as plant pathologists. I have been lucky to experience both of these roles. Both roles have been rewarding, but each has been fraught with its own challenges.

​​Dr. Elvira Fiallo-Olivé, postdoctoral researcher, Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture, "La Mayora," University of Malaga-Higher Council for Scientific Research (IHSM-UMA-CSIC), Málaga, Spain, received the 2022 APS Office of International Programs Certificate of Achievement for International Plant Pathology Research. Dr. Fiallo-Olivé specializes in the molecular and biological diversity of plant viruses transmitted by whiteflies.

​​With support from an APS OPSR Experiential Award, graduate students and post-docs from the Plant Pathology Department at the University of Kentucky had the opportunity to tour AgBiome in Research Triangle Park, NC, and meet with members of the AgBiome team. The trip provided students with a glimpse into the work conducted in this industry and expanded their professional and peer networks.

​The 2022 APS Northeastern Division Meeting was held virtually on April 21 and 22. The successful meeting included a workshop on preparing for job interviews and an interactive Extension/Industry Meeting during which attendees shared current and emerging problems, questions, and discussions. Two 2022 APS NED Awards of Merit were presented to Dr. Gary Bergstrom and Dr. James LaMondia.​

​​​Many readers can probably name several plant disease epidemics that occurred after the introduction of a foreign pathogen into a new host environment. The inverse of this concept is also possible, however. Milo disease of grain sorghum is an excellent example of what can happen when indigenous pathogens are exposed to imported hosts. Its history and life cycle are the rest of the story.

​MPMI proudly presents a special focus issue addressing the #2 top unanswered research question identified by the MPMI scientific community: How do aspects of the abiotic environment affect plant–microbe interactions, and conversely, how do plant–microbe interactions affect host response to abiotic stress? ​​​​The SCN Coalition has received the Public Relations Society of America's prestigious Silver Anvil Award for its public relations campaign to move more soybean farmers to actively manage the soybean cyst nematode. The award ceremony was attended by nematologist Dr. Greg Tylka and plant pathologist Dr. Sam Markell, two of the coleaders of the coalition.
