​In less than two years, an endowment of more than $100,000 has been established to support the Lafayette Frederick Diversity in Mentoring Award in perpetuity. We thank everyone for their support.

​​​Articles in the "popular press" pertaining to plant diseases introduce readers to plant pathology and important concepts in the discipline, including the link between diseases and crop losses, the relationship between disease and environment, and the threat of disease and pest spread.

​​The membership of APS has become more diverse since our founding in 1908, and our society has a history of celebrating diversity. One area in which representation is lagging is in APS awards. We challenge you to help increase representation in our awards by nominating deserving mentors and colleagues. ​​​Two critical appointed positions on APS Council, treasurer and internal communications officer (ICO), will be available for three-year terms beginning in August 2023. If you want to help move our society forward in a positive, thoughtful manner, you can do so by volunteering to be considered for either the treasurer or ICO position. ​Root diseases caused by soil-inhabiting pathogens cause serious losses. It has been opined that the greatest progress achieved in biological control of soil pathogens has been through studying and understanding the microbial principles and concepts associated with pathogen-suppressive soils. This article shares an example of suppressive soil groups in which the pathogen becomes established but induces little damage: a soil in Australia that is suppressive to Phytophthora root rot.

​​Two annual requests for application are now available from the North Central IPM Center. The center funds efforts that support integrated pest management, including Critical Issue (research) projects and Working Group team-building projects. All applications must be submitted online by November 18, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. EST.

The Plant Pathology Exhibition at the Fall Festival on the Pullman campus of Washington State University was held September 8, 2022. The exhibition included posters introducing the science of plant pathology and the department, samples of diverse plant diseases, and specimen slides for visitors to look at microscopic structures of various plant pathogens.
