​Distinguished plant pathologist Erwin Frink Smith was the first scientist commissioned by Frank Lamson-Scribner to specifically study diseases of economic crop plants at the USDA. Smith felt strongly about equalizing chances for women working in science and provided opportunities for women to work independently in his lab. This article introduces a few of the women hired by Smith to conduct their own research for the USD​A in the early 1900s.

​​​Eric Roalson, director of the Marion Ownbey Herbarium, WSU, and eight of his students visited the Shaw Mycology Herbarium. The students learned about the history, collections, and management of the Shaw Mycology Herbarium and about current research in fungal biology and phylogeny utilizing herbarium specimens.
