​​Browning Plant Medicine and Health Travel Fund

Purpose of the Fund

​T​he J. Artie and Arra Browning Plant Medicine and Health Travel Fund provides travel support to assist graduate students majoring in the Doctor of Plant Medicine, Doctor of Plant Health, and similar programs to attend and participate in a professional meeting/conference appropriate to their interest. 

The fund supports graduate students to participate in other professional society meetings, in addition to APS. There is no restriction as to where the meeting/​conference takes place (i.e., U.S. or international).

Funds Available

FY25 Fund Amount: $1,000 USD (1)

The recipient of the travel fund is required to submit a summary article to Phytopathology News within a month of attending the conference. The article should describe their experience and the benefits received to their program and career.

Deadline to apply: February 28, 2025

  • ​APS Graduate Student membership is required. 

  • Applicants who are full-time graduate students enrolled in a program leading to the Doctor of Plant Medicine (DPM) or Doctor of Plant Health (DPH), and similar programs.​ 

  • The student must have completed one full year of studies and at least one internship prior to application. 

  • Recipients of the APS Student Named Travel Awards are not eligible to apply for this travel fund during the same APS fiscal year in which they received their APS Student Travel funds.

Application Requirements​

  • Letter of Intent: one-page narrative statement describing the applicant's academic interests and career goals, current academic status (courses taken, internships completed), grade point average (GPA), and professional, leadership and service activities. Descriptions of innovative projects, internships and/or research that the student has conducted or participated in are also encouraged. The applicant should state what meeting they plan to attend, including the location and dates, and state how participation will lead towards achievement of professional goals. 

  • Copy of Accepted Abstract: While contributed presentations at other professional society meetings outside of an APS event are not a requirement, if you intend to make an oral or poster presentation, a copy of the accepted abstract must be included.

  • Letter of Recommendation (2): Letter submitted directly from the student’s graduate advisor or program director. Letter to include approval of the proposed conference and validating the student’s academic status and GPA. Letter to be submitted directly using the Letter of Recommendation Form
