Farlow was America’s first plant pathologist. He graduated from Harvard University in 1870 and after studying in Europe for two years with Anton deBary, spent the remainder of his career as a professor of cryptogamic botany at Harvard. Farlow developed the herbarium at Harvard and worked on Peronosporaceae. He was a founder of the journal Annals of Botany and instructed many of America’s outstanding early plant pathologists, teaching the first plant pathology course in the United States. Farlow was a charter member of APS.
