Graduate Student Research Competition

The Potomac Division of the American Phytopathological Society is soliciting applications
for its Graduate students who 1) are actively involved in performing their thesis research or have completed their (MSc. or PhD) degree no later than one year prior to the division meeting are eligible and who 2) performed their thesis research with an advisor who works at a Potomac Division member institution or collaborates with an employee of a Potomac Division member institution are eligible.

To enter the competition, applicants must indicate this option submitting their abstract for the meeting. See the current meeting website for deadlines and details. Participants will deliver a 15 minute oral presentation (12 minute oral presentation, 3 minutes for questions).  Students are expected to:

  1. Dress appropriately for their presentation (i.e., wear business casual attire)
  2. Have adequately rehearsed their presentation
  3. Be familiar with the proper use of a microphone.

An ad-hoc committee will judge applicants based on the quality of the abstract and oral presentation.

The first prize winner will receive financial support from the division, and will represent the division during a showcase at the APS annual meeting.  The session, titled “Plant Pathologists of the Future: Showcasing the Top Graduate Students from APS Division Meetings”, is aimed to showcase the top graduate students (M.S. or Ph.D.) from each of the six APS division meetings.
