Distinguished Service Award 2013
The 2013 recipient of the Potomac division of the American Phytopathological society distinguished service award received the Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Davis only twelve years ago. Only 4 years later, eight years ago, our awardee earned a PhD in Plant Pathology from Cornell University. After receiving the doctorate our award recipient then became Assistant Professor seven years ago at Virginia Tech. The award recipient than moved up the rank to Associate Professor two years ago.
So, only twelve years went by since the recipient’s bachelor degree, but how much did our recipient accomplish in these 12 years:

· Recipient of an award for Undergraduate teaching given by the undergraduate students themselves
· Member of the institutional Academy of Teaching Excellence
· Favorite Faculty Award
· Excellence in Remote Sensing and Precision Agriculture Award
Over 30 peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings in the last 10 years
Many millions of dollars in grant funding
Numerous recognitions in the popular press
Numerous service activities at his institution, for example, vice chair of the Virginia Academy of Teaching Excellence.
Associate editor of Plant Disease
Finally, service to APS and, in particular, the Potomac division:
- secretary treasurer of the Potomac Division
- President of the Potomac Division
- Currently Divisional Councilor (represents the divisions in APS council)
- Currently Financial Advisory Committee (FAC) member, APS
- Currently Member, APS Video committee (contributing to the APS video released last year)
Given the outstanding history of service to APS and continued commitment to the Potomac Division, if you don’t already recognize him, it is an honor and pleasure to announce that David Schmale III has been selected as the 2013 APS Potomac Division Distinguished Service Award recipient.
