​Phytopathology News Editor-in-Chief Bob Kemerait tells the story of how sunflowers have become a symbol of hope and determination, both personally and globally. He describes how this seemingly ordinary crop has been tied to his personal and professional relationships throughout the years, making it more than "just another crop."

The Lafayette Frederick Diversity in Mentoring Award was established in honor of Dr. Lafayette Frederick to provide mentored experiences in plant pathology for students and postdocs from underrepresented minority groups. To help complete the task of fully funding the endowment, the APS Foundation and APS Council are matching all contributions necessary to bring the endowment to $100,000.​

​​The APS Foundation provides several awards that support experiential learning opportunities for early-career professionals. Anna Testen describes how sometimes even the shortest experiential learning activities can have long-lasting impacts on your career. Students and postdocs are encouraged to take advantage of experiential learning opportunities, and donors are encouraged to consider contributing to APS Foundation funds that support these opportunities.

​The APS African Division (APS-AD) held its first monthly leadership meeting for 2022 virtually on January 28. The expanded meeting included the division executives and members of six newly inaugurated division standing committees. The date for the 2nd Annual Meeting of the APS-AD has been set for August 18, 2022.

​​​The PPB Early Career Internship is open to APS early career members (current graduate students, postdoctoral associates, junior professionals). Application materials and a detailed description are available online. Apply by May 15, 2022.

​​​​Harvey W. Wiley searched for sugar cane-alternative sources of sugar and served as the first chair of chemistry at Purdue University. Today, however, Wiley is more often recognized as a vocal advocate for food regulations in the 1890s and early 1900s. His life story ranges from his service as a soldier during the Civil War to his campaign for "seal of approval" guarantees on many food products.
