​Because food production can be negatively affected by ANYTHING, including disease, climate change and weather events, and war, EVERYTHING we do as plant pathologists to protect crop production is increasingly important. As a result, "everything we do as plant pathologists" is a message worth sharing with everyone, including classmates from long ago and the "best and brightest" students of today.

An Idea Cafe session focused on Big Questions in Agriculture Microbiome Science was held during Plant Health 2022. The goal was to identify research needs for advancing our collective understanding of agricultural microbiomes and their role in plant health, as well as accelerating the translation of microbiome data into practical applications and management of plant and soil microbiomes.​

​APS is seeking qualified individuals to serve on APS Council for the 2023 election. The submission deadline is December 1, 2022.

​On behalf of the LSU Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology Graduate Student Association, Allison Lunos, Josielle Rezende, and Rebecca Sweany secured the first Departmental Experiential Award funded by the Don and Judy Mathre Education Endowment. The award helped fund an Educational Tour of California agriculture following the 2015 APS Annual Meeting in Pasadena, CA. The trip provided experiences and new skills that will enrich their careers.

​Rebecca Melanson and Matt Kasson have been named the 2022 APS Outstanding Volunteers for their excellent service in furthering the mission of APS through their volunteer efforts.

​At Plant Health 2022 the Mycotoxicology Committee organized a special session on Mycotoxigenic Fungal Disease Epidemics and Postharvest Mycotoxin Contamination of Grains in the Face of Climate Change. To set a table for diversity, all attendees at the session were invited to gather for dinner. Attendees from around the world representing many genders and multiple generations enjoyed a lovely evening.

​​​This article is the first in a series introducing the concept of suppressive soils and summarizing what we have learned from their study. Investigation of these types of soils has been instrumental in revealing some of the fundamentals of soil microbiology, raising the foundation for our current understanding of the biology and ecology of soil microbial community structures.​

​​​An 8-day STEM summer camp at Augustana University in South Dakota exposed campers to science and research in a university setting. The camp helped to build the scientific identity of Augustana students by giving them an opportunity to mentor the campers. Diverse representation was promoted by advocating to schools and providing scholarships.

​​​​A visit to the United States by A. K. Kesharwani in June 2022 was supported by the Science and Engineering Research Board, Government of India, enabling Kesharwani to participate in the 7th Xanthomonas Genomics Conference Florida 2022. Research results on "Black Rot Disease Incited by Indian Race 1 of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris in Brassica juncea L. cv. Pusa Bold in India" have been published by A. K. Kesharwani et al. in Plant Disease.

​The Depart​ment of Plant Pathology, Washington State University, held its 2022 statewide faculty meeting on August 25 and 26. The meeting included reviews and discussions on research, teaching, Extension, and other special programs, as well as poster and mini-talk presentation sessions on research.
