Without students today who are interested in research and the science of agriculture, it will be difficult to ensure a stable food supply for tomorrow. Success in attracting the "best and brightest" to plant pathology and other disciplines within agricultural sciences is key to feeding the world and managing the environmental impact of agriculture.​

​The APS Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) Accessibility Subcommittee ​has been working to make our annual meetings more accessible, equitable, and inclusive for everyone. Several changes were included at Plant Health 2022, and we are working with APS leadership to incorporate more best practices for organizing accessible meetings in future events.​

​The APS Public Policy Board and Signal Group are hosting listening sessions on the latest legislative activity and emerging public policy issues affecting the plant pathology community. Learn more and register!

​​​In October and November 2022, APS members staffed booths at the National FFA Annual Conference and the 2022 National Association of Biology Teachers Professional Development Conference in Indianapolis, IN. The conferences offered opportunities to meet with students about careers in plant sciences, to create awareness of the resources available to teachers with plant science programs, and to make contacts with other organizations.

​Beth Gugino is the new editor-in-chief of Plant Health Progress. In addition to publishing in APS journals, Gugino has served as an associate editor and senior editor for both Plant Disease and Plant Health Progress and has also served as section editor for Plant Disease Management Reports.

​Extension Specialist and Assistant Professor Sara Villani is the new editor-in-chief of Plant Disease Management Reports (PDMR). Villani has served as PDMR section editor of Pome Fruits, Citrus, Small Fruits, Stone Fruits, and Nuts. Additionally, she has published numerous times in Plant Disease and Phytopathology.

​​On January 1, 2023, outgoing MPMI Editor-in-Chief Jeanne Harris handed over the reins to USDA-ARS researcher Tim Friesen, whose longstanding involvement with MPMI uniquely qualifies him for the role. He has published in APS journals and regularly reviews papers for MPMI, Phytopathology, and Plant Disease. Friesen has been involved specifically with MPMI at all stages of publication.

​​Fusarium wilt-suppressive soils are the best examples of suppressive soils in which a pathogen is known to be present in the soil but fails to become established. This article relates several examples of how these soils have contributed to limiting and reducing damage caused by different form species of Fusarium oxysporum.

​​You might have heard rumors about the Plant Health 2022 President's Reception. You might think that global inflation is related to petroleum prices, global instability, etc., but it really began with wine. Two bottles of wine donated by Barbara Christ were given as APS service appreciation awards to Krishna Subbarao and Shaker Kousik. Both donated their wine back to be auctioned off to benefit the APS Foundation…and the bidding began.

​Guest Editors Walt Mahaffee, Lindsey Thiessen, Kevin King, and Robin Choudhury invite submissions for the PhytoFrontiers 2024 Focus Issue on Detection and Monitoring of Plant Pathogens. Articles spanning the spectrum of implementation to the fundamental are encouraged. The submission deadline is June 1, 2023.

​​A case study by Kellie Damann et al., newly published in The Plant Health Instructor journal, engages undergrads in the problem-solving techniques and balancing act that growers perform in managing different diseases while maintaining optimal yields. Consider submitting a case study for publication in The Plant Health Instructor.

​Gary Chastagner, professor and Extension specialist, Department of Plant Pathology, Washington State University, Puyallup Research & Extension Center joined Plantopia host Jim Bradeen as a special guest for a conversation about "The Science Behind Healthy Christmas Trees."
