​​As plant pathologists, we generally don't mind answering questions about what we do or offering appropriate advice. Our reluctance comes from not knowing the answer rather than from any lack of goodwill. I recently posed the following question to some of my plant pathology colleagues, "Can you give me an example where, because of your PhD, folks have expected you to have expertise in areas outside of plant pathology?"

​​In the early 1890s, American plant pathologist Erwin F. Smith began critically examining the possibility that bacteria were true pathogenic agents of plant diseases. Published lectures by distinguished German botanist Alfred Fischer disputed this theory. Their ongoing conflict contributed to the foundations of plant pathology: established Smith as an authority on plant disease bacteriology; formally introduced the international scientific community to bacterial diseases of plants; and, in Europe, elevated respect and recognition for American plant pathology. ​
