Tulips were introduced into Europe in 1554. Within a short time, tulip mania spread throughout the continent, with demand for tulip bulbs soon exceeding supply. By 1637 there were more sellers than buyers, and the tulip market crumbled almost overnight, resulting in the financial ruin of many. It is fascinating that a single plant disease (Tulip breaking virus) could so strongly influence and dictate social history in Europe for a short time.
