​Southern corn leaf blight (SCLB) affects all types of corn, but until 1970, it was not considered a major problem, occurring only occasionally in the southern United States. The story of the SCLB epidemic is important and impactful, a reminder of a very costly mistake, and an example of what not to do. The story of this disease and the lessons it provided is the rest of the story.​

Learn to model and advocate for high ethical standards during this interactive, discussion-based course. Expert instructors Mark Gleason and Leonor Leandro of Iowa State University will guide you through challenging conversations and case studies.​

​A new lesson plan by Eva Liantina Mulandesa and colleagues has been published in the open access journal The Plant Health Instructor. The lesson plan is designed to help undergraduate students understand the importance of assessing foliar fungal disease and how to select an appropriate rating scale.

​The Washington State University Plant Pathology Graduate Student Organization hosted a booth at the Fall 2023 Festival organized by the College of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. Using specimens of plant diseases, slide mounts, and a microscope, the graduate student volunteers introduced the graduate and research programs in the department.

​The Department of Plant Pathology at Washington State University held a welcome back potluck on September 10. Graduate students, together with faculty, postdocs, staff, and friends, welcomed new students and celebrated the beginning of the fall semester.

​The U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative (USWBSI) has published its 2023 Fusarium Head Blight Disease Impact Update. The annual report provides an update on crop growing conditions and the impact of FHB on wheat and barley in different regions of the United States.

​​The 8th International Conference of the Pakistan Phytopathological Society (8ICPPS) is scheduled for November 26–28, 2023. The 2023 theme is Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security: A Nexus of Plant Pathogens, Climate Change, and Water Challenges. The conference has adopted a hybrid format, offering both in-person and virtual participation options to accommodate a diverse audience.
