Edna Buhrer investigated nematode diseases for nearly 40 years with the USDA in Beltsville, MD, starting in the 1920s, a time when most growers doubted that nematodes could significantly impact crops. She worked with several prominent nematologists, including N. Cobb, B. G. Chitwood, J. R. Christie, and G. R. Thorne. Buhrer helped to describe the pinewood nematode and other important species, publishing nearly 40 papers on plant nematology. She was also involved in illustrating the developmental stages of the golden nematode (Globodera rostochiensis) shortly after it was found in Long Island, NY.
